Tesla and other automobile manufacturers: the U.S. government has been asked to invest in heavy-duty electric vehicle charging stations

2022 05/31

Tesla and other automakers and environmental groups have asked the Biden government to invest in charging infrastructure across the United States. There is a lack of charging stations for heavy vehicles such as electric buses and electric trucks in the country.
According to the verge, the US technology website, automobile manufacturers hope that the current government will invest at least 10% of the funds in the charging infrastructure construction of medium and heavy vehicles in the bipartisan infrastructure bill signed in November 2021. The bill includes a budget of $7.5 billion.
Tesla, together with other automobile companies and environmental advocacy organizations, sent letters to Jennifer Granholm, Minister of energy, and Pete Buttigieg, Minister of transportation. The letter pointed out that the creation and construction of most public electric vehicle charging infrastructure took passenger cars into account, but did not include large commercial vehicles.
Most vehicles on the road are passenger cars. However, medium and heavy vehicles contribute a disproportionate share of exhaust pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. If such vehicles are converted to electric vehicles, emissions will be greatly reduced, which will have a significant impact on air quality and climate. However, the charging infrastructure restricts the process of transformation to such environmentally friendly vehicles.
It is said that the Biden administration has listed truck pollution as a priority, and the US Department of transportation is providing funds for electric bus for state and local governments. At the same time, the environmental protection agency has put forward a new regulation requiring new trucks to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by 90% by 2031.
According to the statistics of standard s&p global, the sales volume of electric vehicles in China reached 3.3 million in 2021, maintaining the first place in the world, while the sales volume of electric vehicles in the United States also doubled, ending the two-year downturn. The International Energy Agency (IEA) reported that in 2021, the global sales of electric vehicles doubled year-on-year, reaching 6.6 million.
In 2021, about 630000 electric vehicles were sold in the United States and 2.3 million in Europe. In 2021, a total of 16.5 million electric vehicles will be driven on the road in the world, which is three times that of 2018. The International Energy Agency and many countries hope that electric vehicles will replace internal combustion engines to mitigate climate change.
In the United States, transportation is the largest source of carbon dioxide emissions, accounting for 33% in 2020. On May 23, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reported that the greenhouse gas emissions from human activities in 2021 increased by 49% compared with 1990 (the base year of the original Kyoto climate agreement).
So far, the production and use of electric vehicles have been dominated by China and Europe, and the sales in 2021 accounted for 85% of the global total. Therefore, it seems that the United States still needs to continue its efforts, and cannot always limit its commitment to sustainable transportation to words.
